History - A Three-Year Journey

More than dates and wars: a peaceful, hands-on journey through history, explored through our common human needs.

Three-Year Elementary History Program

This comprehensive three-year program introduces children to the great stories of human history through the Montessori approach. The journey begins with foundational lessons on time: understanding the year and its parts, learning to tell time, and exploring BC/AD (or BCE/CE). From there, children are introduced to the concept of Fundamental Human Needs, a central part of the Montessori method that helps them see how all people, across all times and places, share the same basic needs while expressing them in beautifully diverse ways. Children then move on to independent exploration of key historical periods, including Prehistory, Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, the Indus Valley, the Minoans, the Olmec, Greece, Rome, the Aztec, and the Inca. Fourteen booklets covering these civilizations are included in PDF format. Along the way, children learn how to conduct their own research and are encouraged to bring history to life through creative projects such as building models of shelters, preparing period-inspired feasts, designing clothing and so on.

With this program, there are no Montessori materials to purchase separately. Nearly everything is provided as PDF files, ready for the adult to print and assemble for classroom or home use.

This is a rich and engaging way to study history, one that fosters curiosity, creativity, and a deep respect for human cultures throughout time.
